Exhibition - STEELHEADS by James Korpan - Estevan Art Gallery - Closing Reception Feb 26th 7 pm

Steelheads

James Korpan has an exhibition, Steelheads, at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum Jan. 4 to Feb. 25, 2010. The show features abstracted welded steel portrait busts of mythical subjects. An artists talk / reception will be held on Friday February 26th, 7:00 pm – 9:00pm.

The natural world and its biological manifestation provides Korpan with an inexhaustible source of mystery. The welded steel sculptures presented in the Gallery II space at the EAGM are not literal representations of actual fish or humans as much as they are the artists expressed reactions to the concepts of biological entities. The intangible works are an amalgam of the observed, the remembered, and the imagined. Korpan invokes the memory of the originally conceived subject and finds an emotional and spiritual equivalence. Acknowledged in his process is recognition of the arbitrary character of memory and archetypical imaging. This exhibition, commonly referred to as, STEELHEADS 2010 (not to be confused with Steelheads 2005, an exhibition of prior work by the sculptor) have been created over the past ten years. They are the "portrait busts" of concepts and descriptive passages meant to be contemplative pieces addressed in the round. Made from the reclaimed materials from Korpan Tractor and Parts in Saskatoon (the artist's brother), these sculptures are indicative of a lifetime of investigation and research that has led Korpan to exhibitions, commissions, and major collections across Canada.
